In our current digital society we often forget
that artists had an important and often laborious task of recording events
which did not always leave room for creativity and exploration of art.
Today’s artist is quite fortunate to have the opportunity to do so.
History has been rewritten many times and the
truth is still being deciphered; in great part thanks to the artists of
past years. Artists of the ice age were not trying to deceive us, or impress
us. It is believed that they may have been telling a story, or offering
thanks, however what is clear is they were clearly depicting the realities
of their own lives. Were these animals gone from the hunting grounds? Or
coming for the first time? We do not know but we do know they saw animals
and recorded what they looked like - at least through the eyes of the artist
who left us the story to be discovered.
Much of my new work is a tribute to our past
artists. These pieces are made from stoneware, the most abundant
type of clay on the planet. This large bowl could hold a lifetime of memories
and will last (if cared for) many thousands of years.
The designs imprinted on this durable stoneware were inspired by the famous cave paintings at Lascaux, France. The cave wall paintings, estimated at roughly 20,000 years old, depict hunted animals. These paintings are among the oldest evidence of our ancestors, Homo Sapiens. Www.lascaux.com
